Megatharsis buckleyi Waterhouse, 1891은 Phanaeini족에 속하는 1속 1종의 단형속(單型屬) 종으로, 오랫동안 에콰도르 북부의 제한된 지역에만 분포하는 희귀한 쇠똥구리로 알려져 왔다. 최근 인접 국가에서의 추가 기록이 간헐적으로 보고되기 시작하였으나, 구체적인 생태와 생활사에 대해서는 여전히 알려진 바가 거의 없다. 본고에서는 M. buckleyi의 분포와 생태에 관한 기존 연구를 간략히 정리하고, 에콰도르 동부 지역의 나포 강 상류에서 채집된 표본을 새롭게 보고한다. 또한 기존에 제시되지 않았던 수컷 외생식기의 사진을 제공하며, Waterhouse (1891)의 원기재를 바탕으로 특징적인 형질을 간략히 소개하였다.
Megatharsis Waterhouse, 1891 is a monotypic genus of the tribe Phanaeini, represented solely by Megatharsis buckleyi Waterhouse, 1891, which has long been regarded as a rare dung beetle restricted to a limited area in northern Ecuador. Although additional records from neighboring countries have been reported sporadically in recent years, its ecology and life history remain poorly understood. In this paper, we briefly review the published information on the distribution and ecology of M. buckleyi and report newly collected specimens from the upper Río Napo in eastern Ecuador. We also provide the first photographs of the male genitalia and briefly summarize the diagnostic morphological characters based on the original description by Waterhouse (1891).
