Spodistes Burmeister is a genus of the tribe Agaocephalini. Spodistes is unique in its velvety surface and strongly developed horns. Its resemblance to Lycomedes Brême is so pronounced that the first two Spodistes species were described under Lycomedes. Burmeister (1847) used the nomenclature “Spodistes,” however, he concluded that the Spodistes specimens were actually L. reichei Brême. The name Spodistes was revived by Arrow in 1902. This early confusion resulted in S. hopei Arrow being designated as the type species of Spodistes.
